the former los angeles police officer continues to allude authorities, he may be getting something he wants. "today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us in the newsroom to explain. good morning. >> over the weekend lapd announcing a $1 million reward being offered for arrest and conviction of christopher dorner. now police chief charlie beck saying this is the largest local reward ever offered. several hours after making that statement sunday, tense moments at a lowe's store where two people thought they spotted dorner. the store was evacuated but police say it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. the search for dorner continues to focus on the area around big bear where police found a cache of weapons and camping gear inside his burned out truck. that is new over the weekend. also in a new twist, los angeles police say they are going to reopen dorner's case that originally closed back in 2009 when he was fired for making false complaints about his training officer and no doubt this is what dorner wants.

>> people think maybe there is something to what he says. i want to put that to rest. the only way i know how to do that is to review what's been reviewed at multiple levels. support continues to grow for dorner. on friday i showed you this facebook page that says i support christopher dorner. it had over 900 likes. this morning it has more than 8,300 fans. coming up, we'll look at new video of dorner that surfaced over the weekend as well. jon? >> okay. thank you for that update. 5:04 right now. palo alto police releasing a sketch of an armed robbery suspect. officers are looking for a man in his 30s that looks like this. a thin build and is about 5'8". on saturday morning police say another man had just parked his car at an apartment complex near highway 101 when the suspect pointed a gun at him and took his wallet and ran. the victim, we're happy to

report, was not hurt and detectives seem to think this could be related to a robbery a few weeks ago of a couple near downtown palo alto. the descriptions are similar of the gunmen in both of these cases. two people expected to survive after crashing their car down a south bay ravine. firefighters were called to the scene yesterday afternoon around 2:00 on mt. hamilton road about a mile east of with it meets clayton road. the victim's car fell 150 feet below the road. one person had minor injuries and was able to get out of the wreck. the other victim suffered significant injuries and remained trapped. it took rescue crews several hours to reach them and eventually bring them up to the hillside. dozens of tires slashed along one street in concord and police right now searching for that suspect along bel air drive. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in concord right now and has the rest of that story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. what a way to start the week. this is not just expensive, it's

widespread. it's on several blocks here in concord. dozens of tires slashes and in most cases we're talking about all four of the tires on the vehicle like this suv. also the van there in the driveway. that one was hit. a couple more down the street. two other cars and then across the road clayton road from where we are standing bel air drive there were some tires slashed there. concord police first heard of this sunday morning around 7:00 a.m. that's when some of the car owners phoned in with the problem. at least 60 cars with their tires slashed in all and the more they looked around, the worst it got. glacier drive, bel air drive, and some of the streets actually connect here. it looks like whoever did this may have just driven around from side to side there. tens of thousands of dollars in damage. who would do this? that's unclear. concord police haven't said and so far no word on any arrests. no suspect information. reporting live in concord, christie smith, "today in the bay."

moments and show you the seven day. i think you'll like it if you are looking for the warmth. first, let's check the drive. mike inouye. >> if you are looking toward the peninsula as we are right here with san mateo bridge, you're looking at a nice drive westbound with taillights. steady stream coming out of the toll plaza over toward the high rise. clearly visible. no delays on the peninsula. we'll talk about a couple earlier issues approaching san mateo bridge north 880 a crash blocking two slow lanes. it since cleared over the last few minutes. no delays 880 at 92. also construction south 880 around 98. crews cleared but there is slowing in both directions approaching the interchange. i should say off-ramp instead of interchange. smooth flow toward the maze. arrows pointing in your commute direction westbound across the bay bridge with no delays at the toll plaza right now, guys. back to you. >> thank you very much. 5:08. coming up, we head to arizona where spring training gets under way this week. a live report on what to expect from your reigning world series

as long as we're perusing the newspaper this morning, "the new york times" took a test drive and they ran out of electricity. they set up recharging stations every 250 miles but it's cold on the east coast and that reduces battery charge. ultimately that tesla had to be towed away. did courtney reagan make it through the big blizzard? let's check in with cnbc word headquarters. good morning. >> good morning, scott. i'm here. we made it through the blizzard. it snows in february on the east coast. what are you going to say? futures are higher as the markets come off a positive week. nasdaq and s&p 500 posting six straight weekly gains to start the year. the last time the s&p did that was way back in 1971. the dow, however, broke its five-week winning streak. economic data today not out today but we get reports of consumer sentiment this week. the dow rising nearly 49 points on friday to 13,992. the nasdaq adding 28 to 3193.

no problems heading way south we do have a deadly head-on crash that was just reported. right around the visitor center off i-5 on 152 heading in toward the area. this might affect traffic in both directions if you take this out of gilroy and over toward i-5 there will be flashing lights at least for another hour, likely two hours. more details on the situation but i want to give folks in the area a heads-up on that just in case you're planning the early morning travel. jumping closer to our morning commute, we're looking over here to the tri-valley and west 580 south 680 smooth drive. it's north 680 that shows slowing heading up into the san ramon valley. no incidents there but we are seeing the slowdown. we'll track you and let you know if something comes in from chp. lighter volume of traffic past the coliseum but live look shows lighter volume still maintains at the speed limit through downtown and southbound side which picks up a few cars but no delays. the bay bridge, we have a nice flow of traffic coming off the

where training will be as the weeks roll on here in arizona up to opening day back in the bay area. i tell you this. when you think back to halloween, it's almost valentine's day. you think back to a great parade. the second parade in three years with the giants and it's time for a bit before we get pitchers and catchers here to reflect on that world series once again. we get help. take a look. with two world series titles in the past three seasons, the giants return to scottsdale for spring training after an off-season that gave the team time to reflect of the accomplishments of the past several years. there was great optimism regarding the season ahead and getting back to work as defending champs certainly a boost heading into spring training here in arizona. >> it's a great feeling. especially the comments that were made like how well we played as a team and how we executed fundamentals. it makes a coach and manager feel good. >> coming out of it and coming

welcome back. happy monday. a live look downtown san jose in the south bay. you can see the hp pavilion there. the sharks are out on the road and struggling a little bit lately. four straight games unable to post a victory. on the road in columbus right now taking on the blue jackets tonight. we'll have reports on that one. hopefully a victory tomorrow. 5:22. right now an effort is under way in san francisco to register african-americans as possible bone marrow donors. hoping to raise awareness of the need of donors in the black community. today's event honors a bay area man diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in need of a transplant. san francisco taxpayers could foot the bill for america's cup with just six

announcement in latin during a very small gathering at the vatican this morning. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san jose right now where bay area church goers are just learning this monumental news. bob, good morning. >> reporter: or soon will be. good morning to you, jon. st. christopher will be holding its daily mass at 6:30 this morning about an hour from now here in willow glen. the news only broke a few hours ago around 3:00 local time this morning. news that the 85-year-old pope, pope benedict xvi will be stepping down because of health reasons this february 28th. you are looking at a live shot from the vatican where the news came out of this morning and an official announcement this news has taken many people by surprise not only catholics here in the bay area and the united states but people in the vatican itself. according to the pope's brother who spoke with a german news agency, the pope has been thinking about retiring for

several months now. he's having trouble walking and his doctor recently advised that he stop taking transatlantic trips so he will be resigning effective february 28th. the vatican did release a statement on behalf of the pope. a three paragraph statement. i want to read just a portion of it to you. i'm quoting right here from the pope. "after having repeatedly examined my conscience before got i came to certainty that my strengths to an advanced age are no longer usuited to the ministry. it must be carried out not only with words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering." >> esteem for the office of the successor of st. peter which is what the pope is, bishop of rome, he says i may not be up to it now and perhaps i can best serve jesus and his church and his people by stepping aside. so i have to admire him

immensely. >> that was the american cardinal timothy dolan speaking this morning on the "today" show. he along with other cardinals will form a conclave in march after the pope resigns and during that conclave they'll determine who will be the successor, the next supreme pontiff. again, the pope benedict xvi stepping down february 28th. this is historical. first time a hope has resigned his position in almost 600 years. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> okay, bob. thank you very much. major news there. in ten minutes, we'll have a live report from washington with a lot of the national reaction. now to a story that continues to develop in southern california. authorities running short on new leads in their search for a former l.a. cop turned dangerous fugitive. christopher dorner on the run after going on a shooting rampage that left three people dead including a riverside police officer. tellez following the very latest for us in the case. she joins us from our newsroom. marla? >> reporter: good morning. over the weekend we heard l.a.'s police chief call christopher dorner a domestic terrorist and as such authorities are not taking any chances which is one of the reasons why the department is now offering a $1 million reward for his arrest and conviction. the latest surveillance video of who is believed to be the 33 year old shows him dumping a gun belt, helmet, uniform and ammunition into a dumpster outside a sporting good store in san diego. this video captured exactly one week ago. the morning after dorner is accused of shooting and killing his first two victims in orange county. ultimately the search for dorner continues to focus outside of l.a. in the snowy mountains of big bear where his burned out truck was found last week. some new developments. police say they found a cache of weapons and camping gear in that truck. today police say some 50 lapd families continue to be guarded

closely. they are the listed targets in dorner's rambling online manifesto and police chief charlie beck is making sure they have top notch security. >> because of what you are to be targeted because you took an oath to protect others, to have your family targeted because they are related to you, that is absolutely terrifying. >> tense moments at a lowe's store sunday evening where two people thought they spotted dorner. the store was evacuated but police say it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. back to that record reward of $1 million, the police chief says it's the largest local reward ever offered and surprisingly it was easy to put together much of it coming from police unions, businesses and other private donations. jon? >> investigators in santa clara county trying to figure out exactly who shot two men right in the middle of the day and

ended up killing one of them. the shooting happened in an unincorporated area. sheriff's deputies say a man was shot to death sunday afternoon at a home on rhonda drive. a second man was also shot in the arm. he was able to drive himself to the hospital. neighbo neighbors say they knew each other and lived in the same house. >> a few officers have come up and not for that long but officers have come to that house. >> investigators this hour not characterizing this as a homicide just yet but the investigation does continue. the los gatos city council will reconvene to continue the discussions go gun sales in town. they gathered last monday night to talk about a sporting goods store selling guns on university avenue. opponents think the city should have held a public hearing before approving permits for the

store. the store owner says he's following the rules. the debate is so heated the owner told nbc bay area he's even receiving death threats at his home. it starts at 7:00. b.a.r.t. is stepping up planning to ban riders who don't behave. the transit agency's governing body is implementing a new law b banning riders that commit certain offenses like defacing property, urinating in public and fighting with other passengers and shooting. the bans can last 30 days to one year depending on the severity of the offense. a community meeting will be held tonight in oakland to discuss all of these changes which are expected to go into effect starting in may. 5:36. dozens of neighbors fall victim to an overnight crime. their tires slashed causing thousands of dollars in damage. police say at least 60 cars were

vandalized. many of them had all four tires slashed. a cooler day of the week when i show you the seven-day outlook. you'll see where we're headed and i think you'll like it near record territory by the end of the week. 5:37. let's check your drive and see how we're doing there on a monday. >> good morning. the north bay our shot here at the curve coming through san rafael shows an easier building commute there. no slowing. south of here at the central san rafael exit reports of a gate in the middle of the road. sounds like a tailgate off a dump truck of some sort like we used to have at our nursee nurs. it was reported around the san rafael exit. people made their way over toward 580 reports of a panel coming off. a side panel from the multipanel truck there that can raise up there that we used to use. the issue is that stuff dumped off the roadway watch for crews over the next few minutes. we'll track this. palo alto 101 shows no slowing through the peninsula area.

find out the pope is in fact stepping down. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live on capitol hill with some international reaction. tracie, good morning. >> good morning. word from a vatican spokesman as some of the pope's closest advisers did not know he was making this decision and were surprised to hear it as they made that decision himself and announced it this morning. we're getting reaction coming in from overseas. not so much from the united states as this news broke very early here in washington but from the archbishop of england and whales. he says that this was a decision of great courage to step down at age 85 and in history it will be seen as this pope having had much clarity of mind to do so from a cardinal of scotland shocked and saddened that this pope will lead at the end of the month. from angela merkel, chancellor of germany, pope benedict is german born. she said she has the greatest possible respect for this pope for stepping down at the time that he is.

now, we hear that this was a personal decision and that he was not pressured and that he does plan to honor his engagements through february 28th. the date that he set to step down. and that a new pope will likely be in place before the holy week which start march 24th. but that this pope wanted to step down to avoid the rush of easter commitment that will happen within the next month or so. jon? >> thank you very much. of course we'll continue to follow all of that news coming out of the vatican and we'll bring you the latest throughout the entire morning. switching gears. this week bay area sports fans leaving the end zone heading to the baseball diamond. >> a chance that some giants pitchers and catchers might get ready for that cactus lead today and getting there throughout the week. loren scott is covering spring training for us joining us live in scottsdale, arizona, with this morning's information with a look at what the team is saying ahead of all this action. good morning, lawrence.

>> reporter: good morning. we are at the ticket office here at scottsdale stadium. the spring training home of your world champion san francisco giants and they will start selling tickets at 10:00 a.m. today mountain time. it leads to the first game here at scottsdale stadium against the angels on saturday, february 23rd. long before that we'll see players start coming in like you were just saying. the official report date for pitchers and catchers is tomorrow. some are starting to trickle in today and they are in the area. so this is a good thing. really this spring training all about setting a tone and this is what we talked to some of the guys about when it comes to what's important here at spring training. take a listen. with another world series title last season, the giants have established a culture of winning that picks back up as the team embarks on spring training in scottsdale. the expectation for another successful season and the work to make it happen kicks back into gear in the days ahead and the team knows what it wants to

accomplish this season before opening day several weeks down the line. >> it's a new season. new year. new race. and i want these guys to always remember, you know, the tremendous year like we had. at the same time, you have to move forward or else you're slipping backwards. >> you'll have ups and downs throughout the course of the year. we're in a good division. the dodgers made a lot of moves. diamondbacks are a really good team. seeing the padres and the rockies can be a team that can be, you know, off the year before and then come out guns blazing the next year. we know we've got our work cut out for us. i think it's a challenge that all of us are excited about. >> reporter: buster said it. it's a very good division.

afternoon. 38 degrees in san jose. 30 to start you out in gilroy. 36 degrees, a cold start to the day in santa cruz. high pressure firmly in control. this will build in throughout the week. we'll end up with offshore flow by thursday into friday and temperatures will be at their warmest as a result. the big blocking ridge of high pressure keeps things nice and dry. takes that storm track well into canada. so we're not expecting rain showers all week long. potentially not even until the end of next week. 62 degrees in livermore today. 63 in santa theresa. comfortable conditions up in the north bay. only 65 degrees in santa rosa. getting into the end of the week, we do have a celebration. we don't want any of the men out there to forget about. valentine's day. gift cards, candy, we like it all. don't forget us. 66 degrees on thursday. 70 degrees by friday. and it is a woman's holiday. wouldn't you agree, mike inouye? >> yes, i would. i would agree that is the case. thank you for reminding me.

to the south bay we're looking here to the south bay flow of traffic. it's a nice, easy drive for san jose. nothing unusual. we have your typical 5:45 first burst of traffic and slowing 101 just north of 680. this is unusual. i'm taking you down to 152. smooth drive 101 through gilroy. if you are heading out of the area over toward i-5 you'll see slowing right around the reservoir. this is basically the area around the visitor's center. it's a potty break for a lot of folks. in the westbound direction off i-5 coming into our area reports of a deadly crash there blocking two of your three lanes. i just got word from chp that they are letting folks by on one lane. look at the slowing. it's backing up toward i-5 eastbound direction will get distraction but it does look like traffic is flowing just ahea a heads-up for activity in the area. for the commute coming into our area, this is what we're looking at off i-5 in tracy.

205 slows into the altamont pass and then smooth out toward livermore. those are commute directions. we are seeing that early build for livermore. a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza where we see backup in the cash lanes. the volume of traffic turning on close to 6:00 or before. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. it's 5:48. authorities investigating a helicopter cash that killed three people in aftton, california. passengers were recording video for a new reality tv show set to air on the discovery channel. the network says the military themed show has not yet been announced and the use of a helicopter was included in the shooting permits. the chopper went down early sunday in a rural area on a ranch in the northern part of l.a. where the reality show was being shot. happening right now, thousands of passengers on board a carnival cruise ship are stuck out in the gulf of mexico. the carnival ship and 4,000

passengers stuck 150 miles off the coast of mexico's yucatan peninsula. a fire in the engine room yesterday morning causing that ship to lose propulsion power and right now it's running on emergency backup power and needs to be towed to shore. carnival has sent another ship out there to help resupply the "triumph." they were supposed to return to port in galveston, texas, today. the man teaming up with bill bratton to help oakland's crime problem is laying out some of his ideas. police consultant robert wasserman spoke to the packed community meeting yesterday at holy name university. he says oakland should move to a neighborhood policing model to rebuild trust between officers and the community. he also talked about applying something called the broken window theory. >> there's a broken window and someone doesn't fix it and you'll get another broken window and the whole area will deteriorate which creates a breeding ground for crime.

the biggest awards in music handed out last night at the 55th edition of the grammy awards. quite a variety of winners this year. >> and the grammy goes to -- fun! >> the pop group fun taking home best new artist and song of the year honors for the hit "we are young." and record of the year for "someone i used to know." and mumford and sons walking away with album of the year. johnny depp had an interesting performance. two years in a row a british musician won the award after adele did it last year.

you remember google put a black bar over its own logo to protest. wikipedia literally went dark pulling itself offline in protest. the bills were defeated in congress. go daddy at the time supported the bills and 16,000 websites canceled their accounts in protest. go daddy eventually changed its mind. the company will open offices in sunnyvale. the first time it's been located in silicon valley ever. google chairman eric schmidt going to sell half his holdings in google. a deal that will net him 2 billion. financial experts say don't read too much into this. it's a good time to sell google stock considering google is trading at an all-time high of $785 a share. why not? my colleague over at cnbc says that his take away is this is a change in power structure at google. he was ceo. handed the reigns back to larry page back in 2011 and now has half as many shares that makes
